Overview
The 2024 NFL season has been somewhat of a revitalization of the importance of the
running back position. Players like Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, and Saquon Barkley
have been bucking the trend of “RBs don’t matter” and are leading their respective
teams to playoff berths.
Regardless of whether or not this is pure coincidence (the Ravens, Packers and Eagles
are some of the best run teams in football), this revival of the RB position will have
some trickle down into the 2025 NFL draft, and Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty is the
crown jewel of this class.
Jeanty leads The FBS in rushing yards at this moment with 2,497 yards, as well as
leads the FBS with 29 touchdowns. He has spear-headed his Boise St. team to an
11-1 record, and with how dominant they’ve been, Boise St. has sat Jeanty for 8
total quarters this season. It’s a wonder how much more damage he would do if he
played full-time, and he is a top 2 Heisman candidate.
As a prospect, Jeanty’s best trait is his contact balance. He bounces off tackle attempts
as if he is a pinball, ricocheting back and forth between defenders while continuing
to build forward momentum and chew away yards. His frame is compact and sturdy,
allowing him to easily shake off arm tackle attempts. When he isn’t bouncing off of
defenders, he can make the first defender miss as they try to meet him in the hole,
allowing him to gain extra yards before being tackled at the second or third levels.
He quickly shifts into second gear to get himself out to the edge and accelerate past
slower defenders.
While Jeanty is one of the most productive college RBs of all time, he does have some
minor drawbacks. He is not a dynamic speed threat; he easily can shift from first to
second gear, but does not necessarily have a third gear in the open field to break
away from defenders. He is willing in pass protection no doubt, but at times will
throw a shoulder into a blitzer instead of squaring up his arms and feet and
exploding into the block. Per The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, Ashton Jeanty projects to
be the first RB taken in the first round with 800+ offensive touches in college since
Darren McFadden was drafted 4 th overall by the Raiders in 2008. One of the greatest
concerns is breakdown from wear and tear, and while Jeanty may prove to be the
exception, this reason makes it difficult to justify giving big money on a second
contract to a RB. His film has limited exposure to his receiving skills, but he shows
flashes there as well with room for improvement.
Ashton Jeanty is the best RB in college football this draft cycle, and ultimately deserves
to be the rare RB worthy of a first round pick. One could argue that, without taking
positional value into play, that he is the best overall player in this class. He is certainly to
fit on any team with any scheme, and likely finds his way into the first half of the first
round.
